Are you a Spartan?
Eh? What are you on about?
After your baby has been born you may notice a blossoming desire to discover new challenges. You may consider doing something that either you didn’t think you would want to do or aren’t sure you are capable of doing.
What do you do, join the gym? Boring!
Attend a workout class? Yawn
Go jogging – well, it’s a start.
How would it feel to be lean, fit, and strong? How would YOU feel if you told your friends that you ARE a Spartan and have completed the toughest challenges?
Read our interview with a Spartan Mom
How proud would you be of your achievements?
Of course, it doesn’t have to be an exercise challenge. You may want to jump out of an airplane or bungee jump off a bridge. Maybe you want to ride an elephant across country or nurse baby hippos in the jungle.
Whatever it is, you feel that urge to do more, to be more. You are not just a mom, you are, well, YOU.
You ARE special. You can do ANYTHING that you set your mind to.
So, shall we take a little peep at what is possible? Are you ready?
What is Spartan Racing?
Glad you asked!
A Spartan race is a hard-core race with obstacles. It isn’t for the faint hearted or if you have run a couple of 5k races.
Spartan race competitors need to be tough and strong with the emphasis on endurance and strength. Distances range from three miles to over twelve miles with 20-30 obstacles. You can work progressively through each stage of training for the races themselves.
Typical obstacles might be:
- Carrying a heavy object for a distance
- Ape hangar or monkey bars– so you would need excellent upper body strength
- Climbing frames
- Cargo nets
- Rope climb
- Traversing a wall
- Throwing a spear
- Dragging a heavy object for a distance
- Mud – lots
Does that sound like fun? (Fun!!!)
Prepare yourself for a LOT of training that needs to focus on developing strength and endurance. Typically, us women have pathetic upper body strength. We watch a guy swinging on the monkey bars like a big ape and we think ‘looks easy’. Then, you get up there, grab a bar and fall feebly to the floor. How girly!
Give it time. The advantages we women have is that, generally, we are lighter than men. With concentrated training and months of aching sore muscles, you will be swinging along that monkey bar with Super-girl style. We are ALL capable of becoming fitter and stronger. You decide to get started, and then commit to months of hard training.
Okay, I am fit and strong, now what?
Spartan races are progressive. You can start with a shorter distance before you test your endurance. Below, we have listed the progressive stages to aim for.
This is where you will start your Spartan journey. It is a three-mile race with 20-30 obstacles. This will be your first test of fitness and strength. Make no bones about it this race is not for wimps. Three miles doesn’t sound a lot but with so many obstacles to negotiate, expect to feel knackered at the finish.
Afterwards, you may say aloud ‘I am NEVER doing that again’. Go home, recover and then tell us again in a few weeks. We bet you WILL want to do it again or aim for the next level.
It is addictive.
Around eight miles with over 25 obstacles, this is a test for a true athlete. Your endurance and stamina are tested. These obstacles are tough. You can be proud to tell everyone that you have completed this super challenge.
Twelve or more miles with over thirty obstacles to negotiate, this is the Beast for good reason. You have to be one tough cookie to get round this course.
This is a true test of your fitness, strength and endurance. You will be out of your comfort zone on so many levels. Can you do it? Can you surge to the finish with panache as others around you are falling like flies?
How tough do you think you are? Really…. that tough? Well, come on then, prove it! Can you complete a Sprint, Super and Beast in one calendar year?
The commitment to training for this is intense.
Your husband, friends and family will be in awe of your commitment and your physique, well look at you! You look amazing!
Be prepared for the big burn.
This challenge is as much a mental strategy as it is a physical journey. Preparing for this mammoth achievement will change the way you think forever. You will not be the same girl after this.
Are you a dedicated Spartan junkie? Would you prefer to challenge yourself with less mud? The Stadium Race Series is a combo of CrossFit, stair climbing and an indoor racetrack. Obstacles are plentiful and plyometric based.
You will be running fast and dashing around narrow hallways, turns and multiple stairs. You will be running alongside many, many other Spartan junkies, so you can sharpen your skills and step up to the competitive edge for a PB or just to beat the guy wearing shorts tighter than yours!
We think that Spartan Races are tremendous. We admire anyone brave enough to take on the challenge.
Please come back and tell us if you complete your first event. We will be in awe of you as we are sitting on the sofa eating cake and watching Netflix, looking down at our bellies and wondering what a six pack actually looks like!
