How to Make Your Own Organic Baby Foods

December 23, 2016

Make Your Own Organic Baby Foods

Making your own baby food is easy and economical. If you choose organic baby food ingredients, you’re also protecting your baby from exposure to pesticide residues. All you need is a blender or food processor (although in many cases a fork will do the trick), and some empty ice cube trays handy for freezing small portions for future use.

Start with local, seasonal, organically grown produce. Peel and pit fruit as necessary. Peel and cook vegetables and hard fruits like apples. Preserve the maximum vitamins and minerals by steaming, baking, or broiling.

At first, puree or mash food thoroughly. You may also add breastmilk or formula to the puree, both to give it a thinner consistency and to make the flavor more familiar to your baby. Over time, add less liquid and mash the food less to let your baby experience the different textures of food.

Only portion out what you think you baby will eat and refrigerate or freeze the rest of your delicious, homemade organic baby food.

How to Find the Safest Organic Infant Formula

November 10, 2016

Do you want to feed your baby organic food?

Some of my favorite memories of my sons as babies (which was not that long ago they are 2 and 4 years old) involve breastfeeding. It is a truly magical and priceless bonding experience. And for someone who loves good, real food as much as I do, there could be nothing more satisfying and empowering than that tingling feeling that accompanies the milk ducts springing into action to produce fresh milk, full of just the right mix of enzymes, nutrients, antibodies, hormones, and other beneficial components that have yet to be discovered the product of millions of years of evolution, specially made for my baby to ensure hell grow and thrive.

But we also faced many obstacles along the way. The challenges started in the hospital with my firstborn and continued up to the moment my last born sipped his last drop of human milk.

My oldest, Liam, would not latch on at first. I had expected breastfeeding to be easy it was, after all, so natural but there I was, a brand new mom with an hours-old baby, struggling to get my newborn to latch on. Those first hours of motherhood ushered in the realization that, in parenthood, not everything will go as planned.

My Baby Won’t Breastfeed

October 18, 2016

Understanding why your baby won’t breastfeed

Breastfeeding is normal and natural but some babies don’t get the hang of it straight away. They may struggle and cry, find it difficult to latch on, or simply nurse ineffectively at the breast.

It can be upsetting for both of you if your baby wont nurse. Remember hes not rejecting you. If your baby finds going to the breast upsetting he will need you more even if only to cry on your shoulder. Unhappiness is worse if you’re alone!

If your baby hasn’t nursed well by 12-24 hours after birth its important to give him some milk. Expressing your milk by hand or pump will stimulate your breasts to make milk. Aim to express as often as your baby would be feeding, about 8-12 times in 24 hours. Your expressed milk can be offered by spoon, cup or syringe while you both learn how to breastfeed. Using bottles or dummies may cause nipple confusion and make matters worse.

It can be hard when the very activity that soothes most babies nursing is a source of distress. You may feel like there is nothing you can do to help. What really matters is that you care enough to hold your baby close. He really needs to be in your arms where he can feel secure.

Why I Am Thankful for Formula

October 17, 2016

Help for your decisions on feeding

Whether I should breastfeed or use formula is something I thought a lot about when I was pregnant in 2012. Back in the ’70s when I was an infant, formula was more popular and so I was bottle-fed. Nowadays, breastfeeding is back in style, and it’s deemed healthier and more economical. In some cases this is true, but not in all.

When I was pregnant, my husband and I took an intensive childbirth class. It included a session on breastfeeding, where I learned about all of the benefits, how to do it easily (or so I thought), and how to pump. I decided it was what I wanted to do when my child was born.

However, things didn’t go exactly as planned. When I was still in the hospital after my son was born, I met a lactation consultant who tried to show me how to get a proper latch. But it didn’t work so well for my son and me. Every time I tried to get him to latch on, he would scream at the top of his lungs and turn bright red. Even when I left the hospital, he latched on sometimes but wasn’t getting the nutrition he needed. He didn’t seem to like breastfeeding, and because of his reaction, I didn’t like it much either.
